Footnotes
Provenance:
Sold Christie's London, 25 October 1989, lot 181.
The arms of BALGUY of Duffield, Derbyshire impaling St. JOHN.
The Baguley/Balguy family held an estate in High Peak, Derbyshire for several hundred years and family members held high judicial office in that county from the end of the eighteenth century. It is recorded that John Balguy married Barbara, daughter of the Revd. J.F.S.F. St John, Prebendary of Worcester Cathedral in 1819, and it is conjectured that the engraved cartouche signifies an earlier marriage between the two families.
