Provenance:
Property from the Estate of Judge Samuel B. Epstein, Chicago, Illinois.
Judge Samuel B. Epstein, (Lithuania, 1889 – Chicago, IL, 1991), was a Chicago judge for 30 years and former chief judge of the Superior Court of Cook County. He sat as judge until the age of 87 and retired in 1977. He oversaw many prominent cases including preventing the Chicago Housing Authority from fingerprinting its 600 employees. In the early 1960s, he enjoined the City of Chicago from interfering with the sale of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, ruling it was a "work of literary merit" and therefore not obscene.
