NAMIKI: Yukari Royale Royal Court Carriage in Wisteria Maki-e Fountain Pen

Hand-painted using both togidashi and takamaki-e lacquering techniques by master artisan Masato Sato, this outstanding instrument is ornamented with traditional Japanese motifs in warm golden hues to evoke the regal splendor of the court carriage.

Jean-François Canton devotes six pages to the aesthetic virtues and literary-historical associations embedded in this pen's decorative motifs in his excellent book Namiki: The Poignant Beauty of Fragile Things, stating that "the carriage at the centre of the drawing bears the arms of the Fujiwara family. Masato Sato's composition thus refers to the powerful clan of great aristocrats who ruled over Japan almost without interruption from the 7th to the 12th centuries... In Japan, 'fuji' stands for wisteria and remains a significant symbol of elegance, nobility and power."

Medium 18K gold nib imprinted with Mt. Fuji emblem. Outer box, wooden display box, ink bottle, service guide and various papers, Namiki DVD.
