DUNHILL-NAMIKI: Diving Bird Maki-e Bridge Pencil, 1930s

Uncommon Dunhill-Namiki maki-e bridge pencil, created in Japan for the French market, 1930s. Conical form with rounded stainless steel base, ornamented in hiramaki-e with gilt, reddish-gold and blue-green pigments depicting a diving bird (possibly a grebe), twist action mechanism, base inscribed "DUNHILL / Fabrication / Japonaise," missing lead loader, base does not screw on securely. Measures 9cm. Signed by the artist (kanji appears to be that of Shozan Sato).
