NAMIKI: Pre-Dunhill Butterfies and Flower Basket Maki-e and Raden Ring-Top Fountain Pen, 1920s
A rare and excellent pre-Dunhill fountain pen, decorated in the hiramaki-e and togidashi maki-e techniques and embellished with raden details, depicting two lively butterflies on the cap and a basket of flowers on the barrel. The flower basket may be an allusion to Lan Caihe, one of the Eight Taoist Immortals, whose attribute is an everpresent flower basket. 105mm. 14K gold cap ring, flat ring-top, flat endpiece (marked "Made in Japan"), lever-filler (with classic Namiki "lifebouy" lever). 14K gold Warranted nib. Unsigned, but displays outstanding aesthetic virtues.
Note: A similar pen was offered in our December 2014 sale (sale 21816, lot 1218, final price $17,500). That example was from the Dunhill era, and is pre-dated by the present example.
