DUNHILL-NAMIKI: Seahorse Maki-e Fountain Pen by Haruo, c.1930s
Flat-top lever-filler maki-e pen, two gold-plated cap rings, ball-ended clip, 18K gold Dunhill-Namiki heart-vent nib. 130mm. Signed by Haruo Kiyono (born 1895). The barrel depicts a seahorse and a fish swimming among water weeds; the cap depicts the flowering leaves of an unknown variety of land-based flora. Both are rendered in skillful togidashi maki-e. The contrast between aqueous and terrestrial elements conveys interesting symbolic and philosophical associations, suggesting the harmonious interplay of countervailing natural forces, a motif central to Japanese art and culture.
