DUNHILL-NAMIKI: Maple and Pigeon Maki-e Fountain Pen, Signed by Ritsuzan, 1930s
A charming, skillfully made vest pen depicting a pigeon perched upon a maple branch, rendered in fine hiramaki-e with delicate raden inlay in the bird's eye. 108mm. Lever-filler, ditch-carved cap-ring, slightly domed top, Dunhill-Namiki 14K No.2 nib. Signed by Ritsuzan Yamayaki, one of Namiki's premiere artists and recipient of numerous awards for outstanding craftsmanship.
An almost identical example is pictured in Murakami's Dunhill-Namiki and Lacquer Pens (p. 34). Murakami observes: "The lacquer work itself is simple, but it is refined and beautiful." See also Hutt & Overbury, Namiki: The Art of Lacquer Pens. [Toronto: 2000], p. 151 and LarQuemin, The Four Seasons of Namiki [Paris: 2009], p. 197.
