S. MORDAN & CO. 14K Gold Propelling Pencil, Elaborate Guilloche and Foliate Pattern, c.1840s
An exceptional propelling pencil by Sampson Mordan, the 18th century master British silversmith who co-created the first patented mechanical pencil, and whose works are highly sought by collectors of jewelry and decorative arts as well as pen aficionados.
Elaborate guilloche & line-and-dot motif with foliate cuff and trim, hard stone endpiece intaglio engraved with an interesting sword or dagger device. The intaglio is a seal for imprinting upon wax, a fascinating artifact of the golden age of handwritten correspondence. Measures 93mm closed and 118 extended. Engraved "S. Mordan & Co." Excellent condition, operates perfectly. Not hallmarked for gold content, but tested by Bonhams Jewelry Dept. at 14K solid gold.
