MONTBLANC: No. 4 Black Hard Rubber Compressor, Simplo Nib, Rare, c.1925
No. 4 black hard rubber compressor-filler, teardrop clip, #4 Simplo heart-vent nib, size medium. 140mm (with compressor closed). Clean and bright, imprint rubbed, captop star crazed, very good. A rare pen, only marketed for a few years, primarily in France.
In 1923 Montblanc applied for a patent on a rod-pump filling system, which involved a retractable tube to be pulled out and pressed back in. Though the system worked perfectly and offered advantages over prior filling systems, it did not catch on with the German public and it was discontinued shortly after its introduction. These pens have become quite rare.
