J.G. RIDER: Rare and Important Gold-Filled Snake Overlay Eyedropper Fountain Pen, c.1905
A phenomenally rare J.G. Rider gold-filled Snake overlay pen featuring two beautifully-wrought snakes, one on the cap and one on the barrel, with four green stones (possibly emeralds) set in the eyes. The black hard rubber body is glossy and bright, and the intricate overlay demonstrates the highest level of workmanship. Excellent condition, indicia attractively engraved ("N.L. Wallburg"). No. 4 J.G. Rider heart-vent nib. 141mm.
J.G. Rider was an enigmatic regional American penmaker whose pens have long been treasured by collectors for their scarcity, workmanship and aesthetics. Few collectors have seen a Rider pen in person, and very few indeed are privileged to own one. A Rider overlay pen can elevate a collection to top-level status; they are, in a sense, the kingmakers of the vintage pen world.
Provenance: From the Collection of a Gentleman.
