A Choken (lightweight dancing cloak) Noh Costume

Edo period (19th century)
The hemp and silk gauze garment (sleeves now lost) woven with a subtle indigo and white stripe pattern and applied overall with large bonji (sanskrit character) surihaku (stencil) decoration in blue and gold leaf
34 x 24in (86.2 x 61cm)

Footnotes

The surihaku technique is done by applying paste to stenciled patterns, followed by placing and pressing gold leaf onto the still-wet paste and lastly brushing away the excess gold leaf once the paste has dried.
