Footnotes

See note to the previous lot regarding Les Frères Toussaint and the research of Lorenz Seelig. Whilst it is not possible to date these boxes with certainty, knowing that they probably changed they way they marked their boxes in 1773 and that they copied both the style of decoration and the Parisian gold marks, we can date the present lot to around 1755-65. The Louvre holds a box with an extremely similar design by Jean Formey, Paris 1759-60 (Basile de Schlichting bequest, 1914, OA 6763).
