Circle of Francois Duquesnoy (Flemish, 1597-1643):
A mid 17th century Flemish carved ivory figure of Saint John the Baptist

standing a contra posto, a staff in his left hand, a tree stump at his feet, on a circular naturalistic base, raised on a later ebonised circular plinth, the ivory 28cm high (11" high)

Footnotes

The composition of the present figure bears distinct similarities to that used in Duquesnoy's Bound Christ, now in the National Gallery in Washington (2007.67.1). The contra posto pose, right arm crossed over the body, head turned to the right and looking down, drapery swept across the body and small circular base are all apparent in the present lot. The present figure however is even more stylised, his physique elongated and the curves of his body emphasised by the spiral composition. These stylistic features are also apparent in the work of Artus Quellinus I who worked in Duquesnoy's studio for five years (For example see the Martyrdom of St Sebastian sold at Sotheby's London, 2 July 2013, lot 38), and the work of Lucas Faydherbe, who was also an important ivory carver during this period.
