A very large Italian 19th century ebonised mirror
attributed to Valentino Panciera Besarel (1829-1902)
the oval bevelled mirror-plate within a frame carved with flowers, foliage and five playful putti, each joined by drapery, 164cm wide, 202cm high (64 1/2in wide, 79 1/2in high).

Footnotes
Valentino Panciera Besarel, was born in Zoldo in 1829. He trained as a sculptor and worked extensively for the Prince of Wales. Exhibiting at the major International Exhibitions during the second half of the 19th century, he was awarded a gold medal at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle and also made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. A comparable mirror was shown at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and the 1881 Esposizione Italiana di Milano (see illustration).
