Provenance:
Commissioned by Lars Olsson Smith for Bolinder House, Stockholm.

This armchair was one of a suite of fourteen chairs supplied by Svensson for L. O. Smith's (1836-1913) state apartment at Bolinder House. The house was named after Jean Bolinder, an industrial magnate who built it in the Venetian renaissance style between 1874-1877. The building overlooked the Royal Palace and was adjacent to the Grand Hotel. It is possible that the suite was made to designs by the architect Magnus Isaeus (1841-1890) who designed another suite of ivory and pietre dure inlaid furniture commissioned from Svensson for Smith's dining room at Bolinder House. L.O. Smith was a renowned industrialist who transformed the Vodka production process by introducing a new technique for purification. Smith was behind the brand Absolut and became known as the 'King of Vodka'.

Another chair from the suite was acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum (W13-1989), London. Carl Petter Svensson born in Stockholm (1835-1911) is first recorded in the trade directories as a master upholsterer in Gävle in 1860 before moving to Brunkebergstorg 11, Stockholm three years later. In 1867 Svensson was appointed upholsterer to the Royal Court of Sweden and by the following year he was also established as a furniture maker. Among his commissions were those to King Carl XV and King Oscar II for the Royal Palace, Stockholm.

Two pairs of armchairs from the Bolinder suite were offered Sotheby's London, 18 November 2008, lot 224 and Christie's London, 10 September 2013, lot 59.
