Footnotes
The names engraved to the front of the tankard are those of the children of Menz Christophersøn Darre, sogneprest of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Darre came from a wealthy family of traders and as sogneprest, he held considerable status within society. He established the Legatummentziam with an endowment of 600r.daler, which still exists as a scholarship fund at the University of Oslo.
The names of his children are those engraved on the body of the tankard:
Olive Mentzs: Oluf Mentzsøn Darre (1636-1693) vicar of Melhus from 1661-93, who married Helle Andersdatter, the wife of his predecessor, Michel Melchior Falch.
Christhoper Mentzs: Christopher Mentzsøn Darre (1640-1670), vicar of Hamarøy.
Iohan Mentzs: Johan Mentzsøn Darre (1641-1704)
Peder Mentzs: Peder Mentzsøn Darre Schelderup (1646-1712), pastor of Melhus from 1672-93 and then vicar.
Sophia Mentzd: Sophia Mentzonnia Darre (1649-1738)
Friderich Mentzs: Frederick Mentzsøn Darre b. ?
It is likely that the tankard was presented on the occasion of Peder becoming pastor of Melhus in 1672.
The name engraved to underside is that of Georg Sverdrup, a well-known Norwegian family including: Georg (1770-1850) a statesman and founder of the first Norwegian University Library; Johan (1816-1892) 4th Prime Minister of Norway and Otto (1854-1930) explorer with Fridtjof Nansen and captain of the Fram.
