Footnotes
King Charles XIII (1748 – 1818), was King of Sweden from 1809 and King of Norway (as Charles II) from 1814 until his death. He was the second son of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, sister of Frederick II of Prussia, and brother to King Gustav III (1746-1771). He married his cousin Hedwig Elizabeth Charlotte of Holstein-Gottorp (1759–1818), on 7 July 1774 in Stockholm.
Charles XIII was loyal to his brother King Gustav III throughout his life, and took the King's side during the conflicts with their mother Louisa Ulrika, and helped him during the Coup d'Etat in 1772. After the assassination of his brother and the abdication of his nephew King Gustav IV Adolf (1778-1837), Charles XIII became king of Sweden. Since both of his children died in their infancy, he adopted the French aristocrat Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (1818-1844), appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon Bonaparte. Jean-Baptiste, later named Charles XIV John, served as facto-regent until the death of Charles XIII, and later became King of Sweden.
