A US Presidential presentation gold Hunter pocket watch,
Stamped 14k, but not hallmarked, numbered on the movement 5515776. White enamel face with Roman numerals and separate seconds dial. Engine turned case, inscribed on the dust cover; From the President of the United States to Captain John Joseph Proud of the British "SS Sutherland" for his humane services in effecting the rescue of the crew of the American Schooner "Peter H Crowell" November 11, 1893.

The schooner Peter H Cowell 1873, owned by the shipping Line of the same name, left Norfolk Virginia, on the 3rd November 1893 for the Fall River with a cargo of coal. Encountering bad weather from the first, by the 8th she was in a serious condition with five feet of water in the hold. On November the 11th, she was seen by the British steamship Sutherland, on passage from Charleston to Bremen, 13 miles off Brodie Island with her decks swept, sails lost and all boats missing. Captain Proud brought his ship alongside and rescued Captain MacDonald and his six crew by means of lines, then landed them safely at Norfolk on the 13th.
