An Auguste Jean enamelled mosque lamp, circa 1880
Of amber tint and Mamluk style, the globular form with flared neck and everted foot, painted in raised enamels and gilt with medallions of script surrounded by stylised floral motifs, the neck and foot further decorated with abstract floral and geometric formal borders, with three applied lug handles stained pale pink, 15.8cm high, the base signed 'A. Jean' in iron-red script (one handle restored)

Auguste Jean began to make a name for himself from 1860 as a ceramist and decorator of fine faience before specialising in glassware. His glass drew attention for the first time at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1878, where he was awarded a bronze medal.
