An important Beilby enamelled opaque-twist wine glass, circa 1770

The ogee bowl painted in opaque-white with a wildfowler and his dog shooting at birds, set on an opaque-twist stem with seven-ply spiral threads around a multi-ply corkscrew, and a conical foot, 14.9cm high

Other examples of similar Beilby wine glasses painted in opaque-white enamel and depicting wildfowling are illustrated by L. M. Bickerton, Eighteenth Century English Drinking Glasses (1986), p. 332, pls. 1,079 and 1,080, and can also be found in the A. C. Hubbard Collection (see Ward Lloyd, A Wine Lover's Glasses (2000), p. 72, pl. 89), the Sir Hugh Dawson Collection (see Robert Charleston, English Glass (1984), pl. 41f, which was sold by Christie's London, 14 June 1983, lot 101), and in the Julius and Ann Kaplan Collection (catalogue, p. 12, no. 3). Another Beilby enamelled wine glass painted in opaque-white with a wildfowling scene was sold by Christie's London, 23 May 1989, lot 222. A South Staffordshire enamelled opaque white flask depicting a similar scene was sold in these rooms, 4 June 2008, lot 317.
