An unusual early English baluster coin goblet, circa 1690-1710
The round funnel bowl with solid base, set on a hollow inverted baluster stem flanked by two mereses, the stem containing a Charles II silver Maundy penny dated 1675, on a folded conical foot, 19.6cm high (striations and blemishes within the bowl resulting from manufacture)

Robert Charleston (English Glass (1984), pp. 129-130) argues that although the coins in the stems of goblets such as this, the earliest of which is 1661, provide a strong clue to the date of the glass, their 'metal' is more likely to date from the 1680s onwards when the inclusion of coins in the stem of such glasses was first practiced. The inverted baluster is a strong indicator that the present lot was not made much before 1690, a diagnosis confirmed by the existence of heavy baluster goblets containing coins of 1703, 1706, 1711 and 1713, respectively. Two wine glasses of similar form, but with trailing and gadrooning about the bowl and prunts applied to the stem, containing coins of 1679 and 1689, were sold by Christie's London, 9 October 1979, lots 131 and 132.
