An engraved electioneering decanter and stopper, circa 1761

The shouldered form engraved with hops, vines and barley and inscribed 'Lowther and Upton Huzza', with a faceted pyramid stopper, 31.2cm high (minor chips to stopper) (2)

Footnotes

Provenance: The Commander A. P. Barrow-Green Collection

The inscription refers to the contest of Sir James Lowther and John Upton in the Westmorland Parliamentary Election of 1761, when Lowther and Upton were elected against a third. A very similar decanter bearing the same inscription but with a different stopper is in the Victoria and Albert museum, accession no. C.322A-1931, which is illustrated by R. J. Charleston, English Glass (1984), pl. 40b. Another, again with a different stopper, is illustrated by Andy McConnell, The Decanter (2004), p. 97, pl. 138. A similar decanter without a stopper was sold by Christie's London, 15 June 1994, lot 13. A glass with an identical inscription was sold in these rooms, 3 June 2009, lot 197.
