A rare Jacobite ale glass, circa 1750
The drawn trumpet bowl engraved with a six-petalled rose on a thorny stem with four leaves, the reverse with two crossed ears of barley, on a plain teared stem and conical foot, 19.2cm high
Footnotes
Provenance: The Commander A.P. Barrow-Green Collection
It is rare to find Jacobite roses engraved without buds. It is also rare to find a glass incorporating both a Jacobite rose and barley, as barley is not a Jacobite emblem. The rose on the present lot has two loops to the inner petals, a feature which Seddon attributes to Engraver D. An ale glass with very similar engraving but with an additional bud is illustrated by Geoffrey Seddon, The Jacobites and their Drinking Glasses (1995), p. 136, pl. 104. Another with comparable engraving was sold in these rooms 4 June 2008, lot 88.
