A diamond-point engraved heavy baluster armorial wine glass, circa 1715

With a rounded funnel bowl solid at the base, on a teared angular knop above a ball knop, on a folded foot, the bowl engraved in diamond-point with the arms of the Triest family of Ghent within a lozenge, beneath a coronet and above scrolling leaves, the initials CT engraved on the knop of the stem, 18cm high

Footnotes

Provenance: The Verraes family of Bruges by descent from the 18th century, sold at auction in Antwerp in 2013. This was one of a number of early English wine glasses that had passed down through the same family, probably assembled during the first quarter of the 18th century. One other goblet in the collection was engraved with the arms of the Bishop of Bruges.

The arms of Triest on the present lot are inscribed on a lozenge shaped panel and this suggests they were intended as the arms of a widow. The initials CT (or possibly GT) on the stem suggest this was made for a Lady of the Triest family. Ghent and Bruges are neighbouring towns.
