An opaque white Zwischenglas portrait tumbler by Johann Mildner, late 18th century
The cylindrical beaker with a portrait medallion of a young woman, the rim and base with applied rings with a formal floral and gilt-line border on a red ground, the underside inset with a view of Schloss Gutenbrunn in gold on a red ground, inscribed 'Das Schloss der K. K. Familien Herrschaft Gutenbrunn', 11.3cm high (typical distressing to gilding)
Footnotes
Johann Mildner worked for Josef von Fürnberg (1742-1799) at his Gutenbrunn glasshouse of Saggraben which, in 1797, was sold to the Emperor. Schloss Gutenbrunn still exists today, although it was partly destroyed by French Revolutionary troops in 1793. Zwischengoldglas beakers in opaque white with very similar medallions depicting the Fürnberg establishment for floating timber (Schloss Gutenbrunn) are illustrated by Hugh Tait, Five Thousand Years of Glass (1991), p. 184, fig. 237. One of these, in the British Museum, is signed by Mildner and dated 1788. A beaker of this type is in the Corning Museum of Glass, accession no. 79.3.769.
