A Viennese transparent-enamelled beaker with Saint Francis, circa 1820-25
From the Kothgasser workshop, the waisted cylindrical form painted in sepia with the saint wearing a habit, the stigmata on his right side, holding an open book, a skull and whip to one side, inscribed in gilding below 'St Fransiscus Seraphicus', all within an amber-stained rectangular panel flanked by stylised leaves, the gilt-line rim and star-cut base with amber-staining, 10.5cm high
Footnotes
In 1224 Saint Francis received the stigmata, making him the first recorded person to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion. The skull is a symbol often associated with him, and acts as a reminder of man's mortality. The whip to his left has three knots representing the religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For a similar glass with a portrait of St. Elisabeth by the Kothgasser workshop see Paul von Lichtenberg, Mohn und Kothgasser (2008), p. 365, pl. 261.
