A Bohemian cameo portrait Ranftbecher attributed to Karl Pfohl, Steinschönau, circa 1850-70

Of elegant trumpet shape overlaid in cobalt blue and cut with various panels and lenses, the front with a circular panel carved in shallow cameo relief with a portrait of Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg, inscribed 'Carl Fürst zu Schwarzenberg' in calligraphic script, the reverse with a circular panel of seven viewing lenses, the footrim scalloped and cut with printies, star-cut base, 12.7cm high

Karl Philipp (1771-1820) was an Austrian field marshal and diplomat who was one of the most successful Allied commanders in the Napoleonic Wars. He fought with Napoleon during the disastrous 1812 invasion of Russia, but a year later played a key role in defeating the French emperor at the Battle of Leipzig after Austria had changed sides.
