A German engraved tankard, dated 1803

In Rock Crystal style, the clear glass tapering cylindrical form deeply wheel cut and engraved in Tiefschnitt with The Last Supper, the applied loop handle engraved with sprays of roses and the everted footrim with a foliate border, the date '1803' included at the bottom right of the scene, kick-in base, 19.9cm high

Footnotes

The faces of The Apostles in the engraving are all individual and varied. Christ is depicted with a halo, with the youthful John to his left and Judas in the foreground clutching a pouch containing 30 pieces of silver. In contrast to the majority of representations of The Last Supper on German glass of this period, in which a wall or an open door is usually left plain, here the entire scene has been finely engraved. A beaker dated to circa 1835 with very similar engraving is illustrated by Paul von Lichtenberg, Glasgravuren des Biedermeier (2004), pp. 186-187, cat. 116, fig. 175. Another beaker with a comparable scene is again illustrated by von Lichtenberg, pp. 234-235, cat. 150, fig. 240.
