Footnotes

Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780) was the eldest daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. She succeed her father as Queen of Hungary and Bohemia and Archduchess of Austria in 1740, and Holy Roman Empress in 1745. She had 16 children with her husband Francis I, one of whom would go on to become the ill-fated Queen Marie Antoinette of France. By the time of her death in 1780, Maria Theresa was generally considered to be the most successful monarch of the Hapsburg dynasty, despite being the only woman in its 650 year long history to rule in her own right.
