A fine engraved Lauenstein Goblet commemorating Queen Sophia Charlotte of Great Britain and Hanover, circa 1760

The thistle-shaped bowl engraved with a round cartouche surmounted by a crown and flanked by a crowned lion and a unicorn, inscribed with the initial cipher 'CR', the bowl with a solid teared base and baluster stem cut with diamond faceting, on a domed and folded foot, 23.9cm high

Footnotes

The cipher CR was used by the wife and consort of King George III, Queen Charlotte (1744-1818). In Hanover she was known as Sophie Charlotte, and the cipher SCR was more commonly used on glasses of this type. A similar Lauenstein goblet engraved with the cipher SCR was sold in these rooms, 30 May 2012, lot 22. Another example, with a cover, engraved with the cipher SCR was sold in these rooms, 17 December 2008, lot 430. A Lauenstein goblet engraved with double ciphers CS and GR III was again sold in these rooms 14 November 2007, lot 22, and had been given by George III to his daughter, Princess Mary.
