George I (1660-1727) was the son of the first elector of Hanover, Ernest Augustus, and his wife Sophia, who was a granddaughter of James I of England. The present coat of arms was used from 1698, following the death of his father, until 1714, when he became King of England. A similar Potsdam Royal armorial goblet, but bearing a different coat of arms of George I, was sold by Sotheby's Hanover, 5-15 October 2005, Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover, lot 980. A Potsdam Royal armorial goblet of similar shape is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Die Glassammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums München (1982), pp. 275 and 251, cat. 812. Another was sold in these rooms, 2 May 2013, The Muhleib Collection, lot 41. A Potsdam goblet of similar shape, but on which the arms are not royal, was sold by Christie's Amsterdam, 15 May 2007, lot 158.
