A Potsdam engraved Royal armorial goblet and cover, early 18th century
The large round funnel bowl decorated with the Royal arms of George I, Elector-Designate of Hanover, the base engraved with a formal border of cinqfoil motifs alternating with scrollwork, the rim cut with a band of polished circlets, set on a large lobed knop over a teared inverted baluster above another smaller lobed knop, over a wide conical folded foot decorated with a formal foliate band, the domed cover with a teared knopped finial and decorated with a similar foliate band, 38.5cm high (crizzled) (2)

George I (1660-1727) was the son of the first elector of Hanover, Ernest Augustus, and his wife Sophia, who was a granddaughter of James I of England. The present coat of arms was used from 1698, following the death of his father, until 1714, when he became King of England. A similar Potsdam Royal armorial goblet, but bearing a different coat of arms of George I, was sold by Sotheby's Hanover, 5-15 October 2005, Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover, lot 980. A Potsdam Royal armorial goblet of similar shape is illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Die Glassammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums München (1982), pp. 275 and 251, cat. 812. Another was sold in these rooms, 2 May 2013, The Muhleib Collection, lot 41. A Potsdam goblet of similar shape, but on which the arms are not royal, was sold by Christie's Amsterdam, 15 May 2007, lot 158.
