BD-1, Breen-6832, Bass-3174, Taraszka-6, R.4, the only known die pairing for the year. An outstanding example of the second year of the $10 gold eagle. Bright green-gold with warm honey and orange highlights. Intense mint bloom glows broadly in the fields and within the protected design areas. Lightly circulated with rub on the high points, but devoid of most marks that draw the viewer's eye. One of an estimated 3,500 to 4,146 examples struck; the Guide Book gives the latter figure, while the Dannreuther text gives the estimated figure just quoted.

The obverse is of the Turban Head type, perhaps better called a conical cap (for that is what Liberty actually seems to be wearing), facing right, with stars to both sides. The die work is excellent, as it often is on Mint products from this early era. The reverse motif, also used on the contemporary half eagle, depicts the national bird solidly perched on a branch of palm, holding aloft a victory wreath, in this instance without any olives or berries (unlike half eagles). A truly magnificent example, at this grade level, of this highly important, highly elusive issue. (PCGS 8554). About Uncirculated.
