Footnotes

Provenance
Patrick J Ford, Esq
Private Collection

Exhibited
Edinburgh, Royal Scottish Academy, 1913, cat.no.74, where lent by Patrick J Ford Esq, 9 Moray Pl., Edinburgh.

Ford was the schoolfriend who had lent Cadell money for his key trip to Venice in 1911, from which he returned a more mature and accomplished painter. This view of Cadell's George Street studio closely resembles Cadell's own picture The Artist's Drawing Room, painted the same year and sold in these rooms (Bonhams, The Scottish Sale, Edinburgh, 31 August 2011, lot 1016).
Cadell and Adam were in the Society of Eight, founded that year, whose other members included John Lavery and James Paterson.
