In 1813, Daniell travelled throughout Scotland and documented some of the finest views as preparation for Richard Ayton's book ( A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813, and commencing from the Land's-End Cornwall, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, London, 1814). Of Cromarty Ayton writes 'This firth is reputed to be one of the finest bays in Britain' (p.28). Daniell also executed oil paintings depicting Scottish subjects for exhibition at the Royal Academy, praised for their high quality and accuracy of detail.
