Provenance
With Newhouse Galleries Incorporated, New York. cat.no.16375 (according to label verso)
According to typed label verso Major Robert McGregor, in the Honourable East India Company's service, was Secretary and Persian interpreter in the field. He fell at the Battle of Delhi, 11th September 1803.
Raeburn was a family friend and visited McGregor in Portobello, where he lived. Raeburn received £200 for the portrait, which was probably unknown to Sir Walter Armstrong when he completed his catalogue as it has never been out of the family's possession.
