Literature

McTaggart had a long exhibiting career, spanning the latter half of the 19th century, and his early work is in the Pre-Raphaelite idiom. Gradually, the portrait commissions which sustained him gave way to his principal interest, landscape, and here we see a successful early combination of both genres. The ultimate melding of the two was seen in numerous depictions of children on the Machrihanish shore, at one with nature.
