Literature
T.G. Rosenthal, Sidney Nolan, Thames & Hudson, London, 2002, p.175 (col.ill)
Nolan spent a considerable amount of time in Italy. He first visited the country in 1950 and subsequently lived and worked there between 1954 and 1955. Nolan returned again in 1956, as part of an Italian government travelling scholarship, to execute a series based on badly damaged Mantegna murals employing a cubist-style projection of fragments and facets. Nolan's visits to Italy resulted in successful exhibitions in both London and Australia. In the words of one reviewer, 'in Italy he feels at home. After absorbing and digesting it, pondering on its structure and its symbolism ... he understands it's magic instinctively' (Alleyne Zander, The Studio, September 1955)
