The present work relates to a monumental version first shown in the 1960 Open Air Sculpture Exhibition staged in London's Battersea Park. In an interview given to The Times, published 17 March 1960, the artist notes 'I wanted a name for the concave-convex combination and discovered that the mathematician Maria Asegni [sic] had invented a curve so called' (Denise Ferran & Valerie Holman, The Sculpture of F.E. McWilliam, Lund Humphries in association with the Henry Moore Foundation, Farnham, 2012, p.126). The scale plaster version of the present cast is held in the collection of the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio, Down.
