An ivory and tortoiseshell mounted Qur'an Stand for the Ottoman Market
India, 18th Century

of rectangular form opening to an x-shape, the lower half carved with a large palmette forming four legs, the exterior mounted with borders of openwork carved ivory depicting scrolling floral vines with gilt details backed with mica mirrors, the spandrels with tortoiseshell, the upper half with later reverse glass painted panels to the interior, to the exterior with a mirror to one side, and a later inserted Ottoman calligraphic panel with the basmallah written in muhaqqaq script by 'Suleyman' to the other
49.5 x 24.5 cm.
