the Persian double-edged tapering watered steel blade with central ridge issuing from a palmette at the forte, the forte carved with animals including a lion attacking a deer to both sides, the silver-gilt hilt with waisted grip and decorated in repoussé with interlaced foliate motifs, the base near the forte in openwork with a frieze of interlocking palmettes
