PROVENANCE:
with Royal Exchange Art Gallery, London
Prominently depicted in the background of the present lot is Belém Tower. Also known as the Tower of St. Vincent, it was commissioned during the late 15th century by King John II to be part of the defense system at the mouth of the Tagus river, as well as acting as a ceremonial gateway in to Lisbon.
Built in the Manueline style, the tower is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime achievements during the era of the Age of Discoveries.
