A Rapier In German Late 16th Century Style
19th Century, The Pommel Late 16th Century

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, rectangular ricasso stamped on one side with a mark, a crowned 'M' in a shield, a cross above, and on the other with a crowned 'VF', a column between and a cross above, iron guard of flattened bars gilt on the inside (gilding worn) and composed of an outer ring curving up from the right and joining the knuckle-guard, downcurved arms each with a tapering upturned bar with plain disc terminal, and downcurved rear quillon, the surfaces chiselled with meandering foliage against punched grounds and centred, on the outer ring, on a human mask between mermaid supporters, large barrel-shaped pommel (button replaced) of diamond section pierced with a circular hole on one side and chiselled with vertical panels of fruiting foliage, one involving a demi-figure, and grip elaborately bound with varying thicknesses of twisted copper wire and chain between Turk's heads
