A German Sword-Rapier
Probably Late 16th/Early 17th Century

With broad tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with double central fuller on each side of the forte stamped with illegible letters on one side and 'ANNANNI' on the other, tapering rectangular ricasso stamped on each side with a bladesmith's mark, a crowned 'B', iron guard of flattened bars composed of two outer rings, the upper one linked by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, arms, downcurved rear quillon with disc terminal, and inner-guard of three slender bars of circular section swept-up into one and merging with the knuckle-guard, the main elements centred on ovoidal panels chiselled in relief with standing and reclining Classical figures, probably representing Justice, the remaining surfaces, except for the inner-guard, chiselled with foliage against finely punched grounds, faceted barrel-shaped pommel en suite and involving a grotesque-mask on one side, the central figures probably representing Justice and Mars, and grip bound with iron wire between Turk's heads
