An Unusual North European Rapier
Early 17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade (some pitting overall, particularly at the point) of flattened hexagonal section stamped with letters within the single fuller on each side of the forte, tapering fluted ricasso stamped with indistinct crowned 'A' mark on one side, blackened iron hilt of slender bars of circular section, comprising long straight quillons each with 'mulberry' terminal knop, arms linked to two outer side rings below a side-guard of five bars, the lower one linked to the forward arm, and the upper ones swept-up to join the knuckle-guard with small 'mulberry' finial, inner-guard of three bars swept-up to join the knuckle-guard and incorporating a thumb-ring, globular 'mulberry' pommel with button (tang refixed), and spirally twist grip bound with twisted brass and iron wire between slender brass Turk's heads
