A Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadsword In The Manner Of John Simpson The Younger Of Glasgow
Early 18th Century

With associated broad tapering double-edged blade cut with three fullers over most of its length on each side and indistinctly stamped 'Andrea Farara' between cross marks on both sides at the forte, iron guard of fluted bars of rectangular section involving fretted incised panels pierced with circles and stylised hearts, the side panels each with 'ram's horn', a heart-shaped terminal between, and with an oval aperture for the reins, fore-guards, scrolled wrist-guard, conical pommel fluted between line engraved borders, fishskin-covered grip spirally bound with silver ribbon between silver ferrules, and remains of buff-leather liner (some pitting overall)
