A French Small-Sword
Mid-18th Century

With colichemarde blade of sharply tapering hollow triangular section, the forte etched on one side with symmetrical foliated strapwork, and on the other with a sun-in-splendour above a human face between further foliated strapwork, characteristic steel hilt chiselled overall with flowers within suspended ovals, all against gold trelliswork enclosing florets and with borders of laurel, and swelling grip bound with twisted silver wire, ribbon with minute gilt florets and crimped ribbon, the shell-guard retaining very faint traces of original blueing
