A Left-Hand Dagger
Early 17th Century, Probably German Or Italian

With slender sharply tapering blade of stiff diamond section cut with narrow fullers over most of its length on all sides pierced with minute circular holes, hilt comprising straight fluted quillons and side-ring, the former widening towards the tips and with punched decoration overall retaining some original gilding, fluted barrel-shaped pommel en suite with prominent button, and tapering grip bound with twisted silver wire entwined with vertical silver-gilt straps, in its wooden scabbard covered in black leather with iron locket and chape retaining traces of gilding, the former chiselled with foliage against a punched ground on the outside, a fixed ring for suspension on the inside
