Of single-sided rectangular form and of crimson damask silk finely embroidered in silver and gold metal threads, comprising St. Edward's crown flanked by 'G' and 'R' and with 'RHG' monogram below, above the crown 'WATERLOO', and along the bottom 'PENINSULA' (some damage and restoration)

This item is one side of the Regimental Standard of The Royal Horse Guards, a regiment of the Household Cavalry of which Field Marshal H.R.H. The Duke of Cumberland KG KP GCB GCH (1771-1851) was appointed colonel on 22nd January 1827, retaining that rank until 1830. The battle honours 'Peninsula' and 'Waterloo' were awarded to the regiment on, respectively, 29th March 1815 and 23rd November 1815. Provenance: This item comprised lot 4422 in Sotheby's 'Hannover Sale', 5th-15th October 2005, having descended in the Royal family of Hannover from the Duke of Cumberland.
