Saleroom notices
The Fife Fencible Cavalry was raised by Colonel John Anstruther Thomson (1736-1815) in 1794 and disbanded in 1800. The colonel, born John Anstruther, came of a Fife family of baronets, the Anstruthers of Balcaskie, and added the surname Thomson to his own on marriage in 1774 to Grizel Maria Thomson, daughter and heiress of John Thomson of Charleton, Fife, whose estates Anstruther Thomson ultimately inherited. John Anstruther Thomson served in the regular British army from 1751 to 1782 and was lieutenant-colonel commanding the 62nd Regiment of Foot in Ireland, America and England 1773-82. He and his descendants were prominent in the auxiliary regiments of Fife for more than a century.
