A Fine 1871 Pattern Helmet Of An Officer In The 2nd Dragoon Guards (Bays)
Circa 1880

The gilt-metal skull complete with all gilt-metal fittings including applied laurel branches below a diamond-cut frontal plate overlaid with gilt garter over double enamel and enclosing the silver VR' cypher, and non-matching gilt pattern supporters with unlined chin-chain of incorrect pattern, the interior with original quilted silk sweat-band and liner, green leather peak linings, black nylon hair plume of other ranks pattern, and in fine condition, complete with its chamois leather storage bag, in its original japanned carrying tin (some damage) with Hawks & Co. brass retailer's shield, and escutcheon engraved 'F. Gordon-Mackenzie Esq. Queen's Bays'

Footnotes

Frederick Gordon-Mackenzie was promoted to Lieutenant in the Dorset Militia on 19 November 1873, Lieutenant in the 2nd Dragoon Guards on 12 December 1876, and Captain in the same regiment on 21 July 1891. In 1884 he was seconded as Adjutant to the Hampshire Yeomanry Cavalry (Carabiniers). He retired from the army on 29 September the same year and died at Brighton on 22 April 1894
